thinking about alternatives

Monday, September 8th, 2008

When you are at work this week or in your personal life, every time you come across a situation where you feel that you need to do something pause for a moment and think about the alternatives.

can’t

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

This week notice how often people use the word “can’t” to you.

Notice also how often you say it yourself and how often you think it.

Cross cultural focus

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

We tend to view situations and generate new ideas based on our own cultural perspectives.

So when you are looking at situations for the next couple of weeks try to think how someone from a different culture might view the situation.

What ideas might they generate?

challenging your thinking

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

How about trying this for a couple of weeks?

Every time you are about to do something that will take a considerable amount of time and effort ask yourself:

  • “Why am I doing this?”
  • “Why does this need to be done?”

This should not take up much time at all but if you ask yourself these two questions consistently for a couple of weeks you are likely to:

  1. Save yourself a lot of time
  2. Generate some neat ideas about how things could be done better

If you had the time?

What would you do if you knew that you had the time you needed to do it?

the passing of time

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

I am of the age group where I can remember:

Our first (black and white) TV

Not having enough to eat

Two channels on the TV

The first PC

The first colour TV

The Internet

The first 30 megabyte hard disk - it was the size of the boot of my car

etc.

I am now typing on a computer with previously unimaginable amounts of memory, processing power, high resolution graphics screen, writing a blog entry across a high speed internet connection.

I have learned all these things as I got older but did not forsee many of them or even think that much about what the future might be like.

Sitting here now I wonder what my new granddaughter will see in her life? What will be predictable and what things will appear unforseen.

Can you imagine how the future will unfold?

How far ahead can you see clearly?

do you ever get stuck in your thinking?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

What does it feel like when you get stuck in your thinking?

Might there be times when you are stuck in your thinking and don’t even realise it?

What would it be like if you could spot it when you do get stuck?

What would it be like if you could unblock your thinking whenever you wanted to?

If you could learn how to do this what ways could you apply this ability?

What difference could this make to your personal and business life?

how we limit our thinking

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

We often limit our thinking. We stop ourselves even thinking about a situation (never mind doing something about it).

This could be for a variety of reasons from past experience (which could now be wrong) to simple lack of confidence.

But often the reason is because we don’t even give an idea “breathing room”.

So the thought for this week is:

What would you do if you knew that you could do it?

clothes pegs

Monday, March 24th, 2008

Whilst standing in my back yard a few days ago I noticed that the people next door had left their clothes pegs on their clothes line. This got me thinking.

1. Do they always to that and if so why had I never noticed it before?

2. Which approach is the most efficient for hanging up clothes. Leave the pegs on the line or as I do put them away neatly in the basket?

3. Are there better ways of doing it?

After some thinking about this I realised that although the statement of the problem is very simple the best solution is not immediately obvious.

This is an example of one of the things that we take for granted in life and never really question. We would normally not spot this sort of thing as we are so used to doing things our own way that we don’t even notice how other people do things never mind question which is the best way.

Are there things in your personal or work life that are so deeply entrenched that you do not even know that you are doing them in a certain way?

How could you notice these things if you are not noticing them now?

Oh - and what is the best solution to the situation with the clothes pegs?
